Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin is cursed with a penchant for intellectual honesty
In a little noticed article on page 19 of the September 1 edition of Maariv, the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, Reuven Rivlin, assailed the actors and artists who have refused to perform at the theater in the Jewish settlement of Ariel. As a proud advocate of Greater Israel and professed friend of even the most fanatical members of the settlement enterprise (see his remarks at the recent funeral of murdered settlers in Kiryat Arba), Rivlin’s attack would not have been significant if he hadn’t revealed some uncomfortable facts in the process.
Seemingly lost in his anger at the lefty artists, Rivlin conceded that the founders of Israel, the cream of the kibbutznikim, had carried out a campaign of ethnic cleansing to a massive degree. “I say to those who want to boycott – Deer Balkum ['beware' in Arabic],” Rivlin said to Maariv. “Those who expelled Arabs from En-Karem, from Jaffa, and from Katamon [in 1948..] lost the moral right to boycott Ariel.”
So according to one of the most powerful politicians in Israel, the official story of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which denies that Palestinians were forced from their homes in 1948 (they “abandoned their homes…at the request of Arab leaders,” the ministry’s website claims), is false. The Nakba happened after all. But in Rivlin’s view, those who carried out the Nakba no “moral right” to oppose settlement activity because they stole more from the Palestinians than the settlers intend to steal.
As it is said, there is no honor among thieves.
Here is a complete translation of the Hebrew-only Maariv report (thanks to the great Aki Orr for translation assistance):
Rivlin castigates the boycotting artists (“Ma’ariv” Sept. 1, bottom of page 19)
Rubi Rivlin, Chairman of the KNESSET, yesterday viciously attacked Israeli artists, players, and writers, who imposed a cultural boycott on the town of ARIEL, due to its location beyond the “Green Line” [in territories conquered in 1967]
“I say to those who want to boycott – Deer Balkum [“beware” in Arabic] Those who expelled Arabs from En-Karem, from Jaffa, and from Katamon [in 1948..] lost the moral right to boycott Ariel” said Rivlin to “Ma’ariv” yesterday.
Rivlin described the artists’ call for a boycott as “lacking intellectual honesty” adding that those who settled in Ariel and other places in Judea and Samaria [the official Israeli name for the occupied West Bank] did so “due to the orders of society, and some may say – due to the orders of Zionism.”

yup,
the angry words of a politician are definitely proof
guess when the bushies said that there was wmd in iraq, that was all the proof one needed…
hey max…the historical record stands…
there was a war…some arabs as a result of the war were indeed expelled…most left as a result of their leaders telling them to go, so that it would be easier to push the people that you have chosen to cut yourself off from, into the sea.
btw max,
how do you know that the murder victims were fanatics…and why does that even matter?
max…come back to america…2 months to the election…the dems are in serious trouble…they need you to make some more funny videos and/or to write another book that no one will buy
Sounds like Walt Kovacs should read Ilan Pappe’s historically accurate THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINE or Benny Morris or Tom Segev or Avi Shlaim et al., all of whom consulted the archive materials. Then he won’t make naive statements like “There was a war… some arabs as a result of the war were indeed expelled… most left as a result of their leaders telling them to go” – Plan D was in action for a full year before the war of independence, once the Brits stated (after the King David Hotel bombing by Jewish underground/terrorists/freedom fighters/partisans/nuts) that they would be leaving in May 1948. Lifta was when, Walt? Dir Yassin which date? Of course we didn’t cause the refugee problem, they just felt like going on long nature walks for days with no food or fare money. In December 1947 and April 1948. Walt, the truth sets you free! Only with truth will we Israelis get to reconciliation, responsibility for the past mistakes or deeds we felt we had to do, and for our colonialism and inherent racism that increase over the years. But don’t expect too much enlightening history in the upcoming period. Bibi just passed a law keeping the archives shut for 70 years, as opposed to the previous law for only 50. Does he have something to hide?
Proof has been out there for some time. Benny Morris uncovered this document that was produced by Israeli Defence Forces Intelligence Service. on June 30, 1948.
“The Emigration of the Arabs of Palestine in the Period 1/12/1947/- 1/6/1948″
According to the report, on the eve of the UN Partition Plan Resolution of 29 November 1947, there were 219 Arab villages and four Arab, or partly Arab towns in the areas earmarked for Jewish statehood. The total Arab population was 342,000. By 1 June 1948, 180 of these villagers and towns had been evacuated, with 239,000 Arabs fleeing the areas of the Jewish state. In addition, 152,000 Arabs had fled form areas which had been designated for Palestinian Arab statehood (Jaffa, Jenin, Acre, parts of Jerusalem +70 villagers). According to the report, the total number of refugees was 391,000 by 1 June 1948, +/- 10-15 percent….
The report identifies four stages in the exodus, where stage 4, in May 1948 being the decisive stage.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_and_After#The_Harvest_of_1948_and_the_creation_of_the_Palestinian_Refugee_problem
This report confirms:
1) Palestinians were expelled before the Declaration of the Israeli State and the Arab League’s action.
2) They were expelled from districts nowhere near the action and outside the proposed Jewish State.
3) They did not leave of their own volition or at the urging of the Arab League.
This reminds me of Begin’s admission that Israel started the 1967 war as a way to deflect criticism for his own invasion of Lebanon. How much evidence is needed to debunk Israeli propaganda?
well,
if the new historians work is proof enough, why did max see the need of quoting from a politician?
fact is, the scholarship of the new historians is constantly being questioned…even by themselves (i suggest you read morris’ new work)
its rather simple…if ethnic cleansing were the goal of the original founders of the modern state of israel…why did they do such a piss poor job?
and deir yassin did occur during the war of 48
i think its also interesting that the new historians are the last word in what occurred between 47-67, yet the historical records of the peel commission are always set aside
commissions findings, that most of the arab’s complaints regarding land deals had nothing to do with favoritism to the jew…but had to do with arab immigration during that period
the arabs are not indigenous to the land
oh…wiki is not a good source for anything
RE: Rivlin’s admission: Israel “expelled Arabs” – Max Blumenthal
MY COMMENT: No! That’s not fair! That does not count! He said it in Hebrew, not in English! What is said in Hebrew stays in Hebrew!!! (sort of like Vegas)
Dickerson3870,
logged in only to say: lol
walt,
So wrong your comments, people dying and suffering and you only keep offering fear and contempt, no faith and compassion
“the arabs are not indigenous to the land”
Stop spewing your discredited Zionist crap. Being an arab is overwhelmingly not an ethnic identity, but a cultural one. Otherwise, according to your logic, the whole Middle East and North Africa would be empty of an indigenous population.Nonsense.The language of the Palestinians is Arabic, Arabic being the language the indigenous population adopted after the arrival of Islam.Had the creation of Israel never took place, the Jews of the Middle East would have refered to themselves as Arabs, just as the majority of Christians and Muslims living there do. You dont even need to be indigenous to the Middle East to speak Arabic.Just look at Malta, a European country. The Palestinians are the descendant of the indigenous semitic Jews. Put that in your nationalist pipe and smoke it.
but had to do with arab immigration during that period”
When do you people ever stop? Dont you feel pathetic uttering “facts“
long discredited? Joan Peters is a fraud and her book has been know as a fraud for over 20 years and yet you cant stop yourself.Amazing.

…
oh…wiki is not a good source for anything”
Okay.
So Arab Scholars and historians (like Said) are certainly not a good source.
Israeli New Historians are not a good source (which actually means the Israeli gov internal archives are not a good source, since that is what the New Historians’ work is based on).
Wiki is not a good source.
American scholars like Sarah Roy and Finkelstein are certainly not a good source.
Walt, mind telling us what you consider a good source?
TV anchor and fraud Joan Peters?
Lawyer and Joan Peters plagiarist Alan Dershowitz?
Religious extremist Mier Kahane?
Club Bouncer-turned MK Avigdor Lieberman?
Or is it the “we-didn’t-use-white-phosphorous” Israeli Spokesperson Mark Regev?
Please inform us! Where are you getting you info from?
‘The Protocols of the Elder of Anti-Zion’ perhaps?
Walt Kovaks wrote “the arabs are not indigenous to the land”
Yet, they can BECOME indigenous, simply by converting into Judaism.
Isn’t it amazing? The Palestinians can BECOME indigenous to Palestine via religious conversion!
This is my second favorite examples of Zionist double-think! The first is “Israel won the 67 war, in which the Arabs attacked first, through a preemptive strike”!
Man, gotta admire the mental gymnastics of Israeli-apologists!
walt kovaks wrote “there was a war…some arabs as a result of the war were indeed expelled…most left as a result of their leaders telling them to go, so that it would be easier to push the people that you have chosen to cut yourself off from, into the sea.”
I never understood this act of Zionist mental-gymnastics.
Why would it be “easier” to push the Israelis “into the sea” if the Palestinians left?
Back in the day, was Palestine, like a packed subway train, so packed that both Arab armies and the Palestinians couldn’t fit in at the same time?
Couldn’t the Arab armies just go around the Palestinians?
What is the logic here!
hahaha, listen to me; asking for logic in a Zionist act of double-think! My mistake!
I submit that there is enough blame to spread around fairly thickly; but all the blame is spread according to ones particular point of view and those subscribing to that point of view will not admit to any of their own.
But the facts on the ground are, in spite of any and all blame, that both the Palestinians and the Israelis are here to stay. We can search for a modus vivendi or we can continue to kill then blame each other and then bathe in our separate vindications of our violent acts.
Israel is by far the stronger; the first honest and realistic steps toward the modus vivendi ought then to be made by its government.
Sadly, I do not feel confident that the government of Bibi Natanyahu has any such intention.
did i quote from joan peters? read the peel commission report
peters didnt write that
happy new year to you all
and next year, may all the jews finally be able to return to their homeland…with its capitol….a united jerusalem
Walt Kovaks wrote “did i quote from joan peters? read the peel commission report
peters didnt write that”
Are you claiming that the Peel commission claims that during the 1948 war (and I am quoting you) “some arabs as a result of the war were indeed expelled…most left as a result of their leaders telling them to go”?
Are you aware that the Peel commission was written more than a decade before the 1948 war?
I said it before and I will say it again, you really gotta admire the mental gymnastics of Israeli-apologists. It is one of the wonders of the modern world.
Happy new year Walt.
Max! Hope you are okay. There’s been such a delay and I do so enjoy reading your work.
