When I went into the Jewish religious book emporium, Pomeranz, in central Jerusalem to inquire about the availability of a book called Torat Ha’Melech, or the King’s Torah, a commotion immediately ensued. “Are you sure you want it?” the owner, M. Pomeranz, asked me half-jokingly. “The Shabak [Israel's internal security service] is going to want a word with you if you do.” As customers stopped browsing and began to stare in my direction, Pomeranz pointed to a security camera affixed to a wall. “See that?” he told me. “It goes straight to the Shabak!” As soon as it was published late last year,Torat Ha’Melech sparked a national uproar. The controversy began when an Israeli tabloid panned the book’s contents as “230 pages on the laws concerning the killing of non-Jews, a kind of guidebook for anyone who ponders the question of if and when it is permissible to take the life of a non-Jew.” According to the book’s author, Rabbi Yitzhak Shapira, “Non-Jews are “uncompassionate by nature” and should be killed in order to “curb their evil inclinations.” “If we kill a gentile who has has violated one of the seven commandments… there is nothing wrong with the murder,” Shapira insisted. Citing Jewish law as his source (or at least a very selective interpretation of it) he declared: “There is justification for killing babies if it is clear that they will grow up to harm us, and in such a situation they may be harmed deliberately, and not only during combat with adults.” In January, Shapira was briefly detained by the Israeli police, while two leading rabbis who endorsed the book, Dov Lior and Yaakov Yosef, were summoned to interrogations by the Shabak. However, the rabbis refused to appear at the interrogations, essentially thumbing their noses at the state and its laws. And the government did nothing. The episode raised grave questions about the willingness of the Israeli government to confront the ferociously racist swathe of the country’s rabbinate. “Something like this has never happened before, even though it seems as if everything possible has already happened,” Israeli commentator Yossi Sarid remarked with astonishment. “Two rabbis [were] summoned to a police investigation, and announc[ed] that they will not go. Even settlers are kind enough to turn up.” In response to the rabbis’ public rebuke of the state’s legal system, the Israeli Attorney General and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu kept silent. Indeed, since the publication of Torat Ha’Melech, Netanyahu has strenuously avoided criticizing its contents or the author’s leading supporters. Like so many prime ministers before him, he has been cowed into submission by Israel’s religious nationalist community. But Netanyahu appears to be particularly impotent. His weakness stems from the fact that the religious nationalist right figures prominently in his governing coalition and comprises a substantial portion of his political base. For Netanyahu, a confrontation with the rabid rabbis could amount to political suicide, or could force him into an alliance with centrist forces who do not share his commitment to the settlement enterprise in the West Bank. On August 18, a pantheon of Israel’s top fundamentalist rabbis flaunted their political power during an ad hoc congress they convened at Jerusalem’s Ramada Renaissance hotel. Before an audience of 250 supporters including the far-right Israeli Knesset member Michael Ben-Ari, the rabbis declared in the name of the Holy Torah that would not submit to any attempt by the government to regulate their political activities — even and especially if those activities included inciting terrorist attacks against non-Jews. As one wizened rabbi after another rose up to inveigh against the government’s investigation of Torat Ha’Melech until his voice grew hoarse, the gathering degenerated into calls for murdering not just non-Jews, but secular Jews as well. “The obligation to sacrifice your life is above all others when fighting those who wish to destroy the authority of the Torah,” bellowed Rabbi Yehoshua Shapira, head of the yeshiva in the Tel Aviv suburb of Ramat Gan. “It is not only true against non-Jews who are trying to destroy it but against Jewish people from any side.” The government-funded terror academy The disturbing philosophy expressed in Torat Ha’Melech emerged from the fevered atmosphere of a settlement called Yitzhar located in the northern West Bank near the Palestinian city of Nablus. Shapira leads the settlement’s Od Yosef Chai yeshiva, holding sway over a small army of fanatics who are eager to lash out at the Palestinians tending to their crops and livestock in the valleys below them. One of Shapira’s followers, an American immigrant named Jack Teitel, has confessed to murdering two innocent Palestinians and attempting to the kill the liberal Israeli historian Ze’ev Sternhell with a mail bomb. Teitel is suspected of many more murders, including an attack on a Tel Aviv gay community center. Despite its apparent role as a terror training institute, Od Yosef Chai has raked in nearly fifty thousand dollars from the Israeli Ministry of Social Affairs since 2007, while the Ministry of Education has pumped over 250 thousand dollars into the yeshiva’s coffers between 2006 and 2007. The yeshiva has also benefited handsomely from donations from a tax-exempt American non-profit called the Central Fund of Israel. Located inside the Marcus Brothers Textiles store in midtown Manhattan, the Central Fund transferred at least thirty thousand to Od Yosef Chai between 2007 and 2008. Though he does not name “the enemy” in the pages of his book, Shapira’s longstanding connection to terrorist attacks against Palestinian civilians exposes the true identity of his targets. In 2006, Shapira was briefly held by Israeli police for urging his supporters to murder all Palestinians over the age of 13. Two years later, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz, he signed a rabbinical letter in support of Israeli Jews who had brutally assaulted two Arab youths on the country’s Holocaust Remembrance Day. That same year, Shapira was arrested under suspicion that he helped orchestrate a rocket attack against a Palestinian village near Nablus. Though he was released, Shapira’s name arose in connection with another act of terror, when in January, the Israeli police raided his settlement seeking the vandals who set fire to a nearby mosque. After arresting ten settlers, the Shabak held five of Shapira’s confederates under suspicion of arson. Friends in high places Despite his longstanding involvement in terrorism, or perhaps because of it, Shapira counts Israel’s leading fundamentalist rabbis among his supporters. His most well-known backer is Dov Lior the leader of the Shavei-Hevron yeshiva at Kiryat Arba, a radical Jewish settlement near the occupied Palestinian city of Hebron and a hotbed of Jewish terrorism. Lior has vigorously endorsed Torat Ha’Melech, calling it “very relevant, especially in this time.” Lior’s enthusiasm for Shapira’s tract stems from his own eliminationist attitude toward non-Jews. For example, while Lior served as the IDF’s top rabbi, he instructed soldiers: “There is no such thing as civilians in wartime… A thousand non-Jewish lives are not worth a Jew’s fingernail!” Indeed, there are only a few non-Jews whose lives Lior would demand to be spared. They are captured Palestinian militants who, as he once suggested, could be used as subjects for live human medical experiments. Otherwise, Lior appears content to watch Palestinians perish as they did at the muzzle of Dr. Baruch Goldstein’s machine gun in 1994. Goldstein, who massacred 29 Palestinians and wounded 150 in a shooting spree while they prayed in Hebron’s Cave of the Patriarchs mosque, was a compatriot and neighbor of Lior in the settlement of Kiryat Arba. At Goldstein’s funeral, Lior celebrated the massacre as an act carried out “to sanctify the holy name of God.” He then extolled Goldstein as “a righteous man.” Thanks to Lior’s efforts, a shrine to Goldstein was constructed in center of Kiryat Arba so that locals could celebrate the killer’s deeds and pass his legacy down to future generations. Though Lior’s inflammatory statements resulted in his being barred from running for election to the Supreme Rabbinical Council, according to journalist Daniel Estrin, the rabbi remains “a respected figure among many mainstream ZIonists.” By extension, he maintains considerable influence among religious elements in the IDF. In 2008, when the IDF’s chief rabbi, Brigadier General Avichai Ronski, brought a group of military intelligence officers to Hebron for a special tour, he concluded the day with a private meeting with Lior, who was allowed to revel the officers with his views on modern warfare — “no such thing as civilians in wartime.” Besides Lior, Torat Ha’Melech has earned support from another nationally prominent fundamentalist rabbi: Yaakov Yosef. Yosef is the leader of the Hazon Yaakov Yeshiva in Jerusalem and a former member of Knesset. Perhaps more significantly, he is the son of Ovadiah Yosef, the former chief rabbi of Israel and spiritual leader of the Shas Party that forms a key segment of Netanyahu’s governing coalition. Yaakov Yosef has brought his influence to bear in defense of Torat Ha’Melech, insisting at the August 18 convention in Jerusalem that the book was no different than the Hagadah that all Jews read from on the holiday of Passover. The Hagadah contains passages about killing non-Jews and so does the Bible, Yosef reminded his audience. “Does anyone want to change the Bible?” he asked. Bibi buckles Only days before direct negotiations in Washington between Israel and the Palestinian Authority planned for early September, Yaakov Yosef’s 89-year-old father, Ovadiah delivered his weekly sermon. With characteristic vitriol, he declared: “All these evil people should perish from this world… God should strike them with a plague, them and these Palestinians.” The remarks have sparked an international furor and earned a stern rebuke from Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. “While the PLO is ready to resume negotiations in seriousness and good faith,” Erekat remarked, “a member of the Israeli government is calling for our destruction.” Palestinian Israeli member of Knesset Jamal Zehalka subsequently demanded that the Israeli Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein put Yosef on trial for incitement. “If, heaven forbid, a Muslim spiritual leader were to make anti-Jewish comments of this sort,” Zehalka said, “he would be arrested immediately.” Here was a perfect opportunity for Netanyahu to demonstrate sincerity about negotiations by shedding an extremist ally in the name of securing peace. All he had to do was forcefully reject Yosef’s genocidal comments — a feat made all the easier by the White House’s condemnation of the rabbi. But the Israeli Prime Minister ducked for political cover instead, issuing a canned statement through his office. “Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef’s remarks do not reflect Netanyahu’s views,” the statement read, “nor do they reflect the position of the Israeli government.” Thus on the eve of peace negotiations, Bibi chose political expediency over condemning the murderous oath of a coalition partner.

good work.
one mistake though – Lior never served as the IDF’s top rabbi.

I am left wondering how many U.S. tax dollars end up the hands of the author of a text on how to kill U.S. [non-Jewish] citizens.
btw, praying to g-d to destroy ones enemies is halchacally correct
max would know that if he attended shul on rosh hashanah and yom kippur

here are pics of the victims of the recent terror attack….along with ap pics of those celebrating in gaza…note the children
and steve, the book has nothing to do with non jews in america…or anywhere…unless you consider yourself a pagan and wish to reside in the land of israel governed by a beit din (look it up)
Aren’t those settlers responsible for the attempted murder of countless Palestinians? For instance 16 year old (a minor under international law) Ibrahim Mohammed. Based on this, I’m sorry, but according to Israeli logic, if you live near ‘terrorists’ you are by default a ‘terrorist’, what other logic is there for the collective punishment of Gaza? Maybe you should cut back on the double standards. And before you accuse me of backing the killing of ‘civilians’ (a questionable title when dealing with settlers, who by far are the most violent party to this conflict, and definately worthy of the title terrorists), I’m am not, merely pointing out the hypocrisy of your point.
Furthermore, the leaders of Hamas and even Al Qaeda haven’t themselves carried out any ‘terrorist’ attacks, they merely provide moral justification and in some cases so called spiritual guidance, exactly the same thing these Rabbis are doing! So yes, they have definately been responsible for the murder of innocents recently!
walt kovaks wrote: “tell me did any of the rabbaim gathered kill any innocents lately?”
Why would they? They have a professional army doing the work for them.

Are you saying what I think you are saying? That it is justified to murder Palestinian children, just because of their race?
That’s a new low you fascist scumbag! Do you really expect people to consider you somehow morally superior to a Nazi? Why?
poyani,
what is your major malfunction?
did i say that a child should be killed because of his/her race?
i said to look at the ap pictures of children celebrating the deaths of 4 innocents
i dont care what race they are
the fact is, hamas recruits children as young as 12 to commit acts of terror
they are not innocents….hamas has made sure of that
it is you who is the fascist scumbag
you are an apologist for those who rejoice in the death of the jew

Walt,
Only spiritually dead people are praying to their “g-d” to destroy their “enemies”, spiritually alive people work and pray for peace, we have no enemies.
I submitted a comment to this site yesterday in response to Walt the Zionist, and it appears to have been rejected. Could the administrator tell me why? Too many links, perhaps.
//the only way your argument works is if you separate the political hamas from the terrorist hamas//
You should really study before you comment! The EU does consider them separate entities:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/site/en/oj/2005/l_340/l_34020051223en00640066.pdf
As does the UK:

And Australia:
http://www.nationalsecurity.gov.au/agd/www/nationalsecurity.nsf/AllDocs/95FB057CA3DECF30CA256FAB001F7FBD?OpenDocument
Only the US, Canada, Israel and Germany consider it a fully fledge terrorist organization, and considering the history of one, and the state practiced terror of two of the others, I think I will agree with the other side on this one.
Also, it’s good to see you completely ignored the entire gist of the post, whats wrong, did it hit a nerve? A gift for you:
http://mondoweiss.net/2010/09/take-a-look-at-this-list-of-settler-initiated-crimes-against-palestinians-in-the-last-few-weeks.html
Walt, here is a quick statistic for you, designed, perhaps over-optimistically, to put an end to your whingeing about Jewish deaths.
Death toll in Israel, 2000-2010
Palestinians: 6,286 (Source: Bt’Selem)
Israelis: 1,194 (Source: Israeli Foreign Ministry)
So it’s about 6:1. The murder of those (presumably) innocent people yesterday was a tragic blunder on HAMAS’ part (I have no idea what they were thinking), but it nauseates me that Israeli deaths get so much news coverage while Palestinian deaths go unmentioned by the MSM.

You put up a picture of a few Palestinian children celebrating the death of 4 innocents IN RESPONSE TO A STORY ABOUT A RABBI WHO SAID IT WAS JUSTIFIED TO MURDER PALESTINIAN CHILDREN.
If you weren’t implying that it is okay to murder children, if they are of the Palestinian race, then what were you implying?
You were clearly acting as an apologist for this Rabbi and signaling approval of his racist statement (which is fascism by any definition).
Walt Kovacs wrote “you are an apologist for those who rejoice in the death of the jew”
Find one instance when I said it was okay to kill anyone. I would oppose the death penalty even for Baruch Goldstein, let alone innocent Israelis.
Nor have I ever uttered even 1 racist comment. I have no religious beliefs, so certainly I am not a religious extremist. You on the other hand have dabbled with all of these, even on this site.
In fact, what I am saying is best for Israel, while what you are calling for is likely to lead to its destruction.
walt kovacs wrote ”

Yet Australia, the UK and a host of other countries do differentiate between the two wings. So do Hamas themselves.
What is the relevance of any of this? Only the terrorists who fund, plan and commit terrorist acts are responsible for them.

So let me get this straight. There are two crazy rabbis in Israel, one of whom wrote a book. You call them leading rabbis, and them spend an entire post on how they’ve been arrested several times and are the extreme of the extreme.
Have you investigated the imams in the Palestinian Authority?

Well at least you are agreeing that there is religious extremism and religiously driven intolerance on both sides.
I don’t think anyone here denies the irrationality of the imams who justify terrorism. However, many supporters of Israel, including many on this site, seem to be on the same page as these extremist rabbis regarding the illegal settlements occupied West Bank and terrorism directed at Palestinians.
Unfortunately, it seems that these extremist rabbis have access to a very powerful military (one of the most powerful), to help realize their extremist dreams. The Israeli occupation forces seem to be providing security for the illegal settlements, hence aiding and abetting these religious wackjobs and their criminal activities.
Support for these extremists seem to go even right up to the top, to the office of the Prime Minister and to the Knesset, where laws are passed to fund and protect their illegal religious project in the occupied West Bank.
Now that we are all on the same page, will you join us in condemning ALL FORMS of religious fascism? Will you join us in protesting and disrupting these religious extremists (like walt kovaks right here on this site) and their projects (such as the illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank)?
Or will you sit back and appease the religious criminals (or worse, attempt to legitimize their criminal actions)?
“I don’t think anyone here denies the irrationality of the imams who justify terrorism. However, many supporters of Israel, including many on this site, seem to be on the same page as these extremist rabbis regarding the illegal settlements occupied West Bank and terrorism directed at Palestinians.”
You want to compare the numbers who follow the rabbis with the numbers who follow the imams?
“Support for these extremists seem to go even right up to the top, to the office of the Prime Minister and to the Knesset, where laws are passed to fund and protect their illegal religious project in the occupied West Bank.”
That’s nonsense. They don’t have support outside of their own communities.
“Now that we are all on the same page, will you join us in condemning ALL FORMS of religious fascism? ”
I already do. You don’t. You keep talking about a right to resistance, which for them is a right to kill civilians.
Who cares about these Rabbis? They’re as nuts as the secular Zionists.
Resistance is legitimate. Palestinians have the right to fight the IDF and the colonists stealing their land. That doesn’t mean they have the right to kill pregnant women or children but that doesn’t make the colonists/settlers civilians. They aren’t by any stretch of the imagination.
Israel does not want peace, it wants land. It’s always been about the land. You don’t make a Jewish State on top of an existing society and population without destroying it first and that’s what’s been happening for 60+ years.
So we can quibble over who’s top-hat is more nuts but it doesn’t matter. A crazy Jew is mainstream and held unaccountable. By and large.
A crazy Muslim is fed to the sharks. An innocent Muslim is fed to the sharks.
BTW – hophmi is a clown. He doesn’t know about the PA’s ‘clerics’ – he’s just reflexively comparing whatever disgusting behavior the Jewish State exhibits to ‘the Arabs’. It’s shallow. It’s easy. It’s also fucking lazy.
Go away you cockroach.

Firstly I’m an orthodox Jew. I completely condemn this awful book as well as the comments of these rabbis who support it. Any form of terrorism is wrong. This “rabbi” Shapiro should be jailed for life like all other terrorists in Israel no matter if they’re moslim or Jewish. However to respond to cliff’s comments I lived in israel for a year and most Israelis do want peace just as much as the Palestinians. The blame is on the governments of both sides that have not been able to produce anything. Also, to calling the settlers non-civilians, why do they have less of a right to live somewhere than anybody else. A palastinian can live in Israel, let’s see a Jew try to live in Jordan or Saudi arabia. It’s not stealing land. Why don’t we give our land back to the native Americans and move back to England? It’s land like anywhere else and I believe anyone should be allowed to live there. And just because you live in disputed land doesn’t make you s criminal you are still a civilian. If they came in peace the settlers would have no problem living side by side with the palestinains in the settlements. They just want a place to live
thinkinjew,
Can I get land in Israel too? My taxes are going to Israel too.
[...] In Israel, this argument has now been turned on its head: Ha’aretz reports that “The Education Ministry has cut most of its budget for the intensive civics classes for 11th and 12th grades, and the regular civics classes for 10th grade, and will invest the sum in the teaching of Jewish studies.” Who needs to teach democracy, equality and civil rights when instead you can push a religion that is now being used by popular religious racists to promote and support the practice of killing c…?1 [...]

As you can see, Cliff understands crazy people well because he is one of them.
The statements of PA clerics are not a secret. One can look them up on the MEMRI website, where they are regularly available. And as I said before, I’m glad to compare of number of their followers with the number of follows these two rabbis have.
Hopefully Cliff will take that craziness and go and fight with the “resistance.” Maybe he shoot some children at point blank range while he’s at it.
hophmi wrote “You want to compare the numbers who follow the rabbis with the numbers who follow the imams? ”
Why are the numbers relevant? I am asking for both sides here, on this site, to reject the call of religious extremists. That argument holds regardless of how many extremists exist on either side.
hophmi wrote “That’s nonsense. They don’t have support outside of their own communities.”
The settlement project, which is a religious fundamentalist project at its core is supported not just by wackos like walt kovaks on this site, but by every single Israeli prime minister since they began.
These religious wackos clearly have support from outside their communities.
hophmi wrote “I already do. You don’t. You keep talking about a right to resistance, which for them is a right to kill civilians.”
I have never stated that anyone has a “right” to kill civilians. I don’t think it is every justified to murder civilians, including settlers.
Ironically, Israeli supporters demand this right all the time. Whenever the Israeli army murders civilians, supporters of Israel deflect blame and justify the IDF’s actions.
So for example, during the 2008-2009 onslaught on Gaza, more than 200 children were killed. Has any Israeli supporter come out and stated that these were clearly unjustified? No! They deflect blame by stating such non-sense as “Hamas uses human shields” and effectively justify the murders. Hence, supporters of Israel argue that under certain conditions, there is a “right” to murder, not just civilians, but children.
Same is true for, when Israeli supporters justify the murders of civilians that took place in 1948. For example, Israeli historian, Benny Morris openly admits that the documentary record shows that there were massacres against some Palestinian villages. But he says that they were justified, as long as they bring into existence a Jewish state (he also argues in favor of nuking Iran, which would kill many civilians). Hence, Morris is arguing for a RIGHT TO MURDER CIVILIANS en-mass.
hophmi said “The statements of PA clerics are not a secret. One can look them up on the MEMRI website, where they are regularly available. And as I said before, I’m glad to compare of number of their followers with the number of follows these two rabbis have.”
You keep proposing this strange comparison. I don’t see the point of this exercise, but let’s play anyways.
What percentage of Mullahs worldwide are calling for the establishment of a Islamic State over the territory known as Palestine? 5% maybe?
What percentage of Rabbis worldwide are calling for the establishment of a Jewish State of the territory which used to be known as Palestine? Over 95%?
What percentage of Muslims worldwide accept the notion of establishing a Islamic State over the territory historically known as Palestine? 0.001%? 0.01%? 0.02%?
What percentage of Jews worldwide accept the notion of establishing a Jewish State over the territory historically known as Palestine? 60%? 75%? 80%?
If you do a fair assessment you can’t deny which side subscribed more to religious fundamentalism!
Remember hophmi, you are defending a people who established a state by ethnically cleansing an inhabited land, because they thought god had told them to do so, in a holy book.
You are not going to win a “who is a bigger religious wacko” debate.
And predictably, poyani changes the subject.
Wacko statements from the PA clerics are much more common than those from Israeli rabbis. That much is clear.
As far as your red herring, no one needs to favor Palestinian as an “Islamic state”. It will be an Islamic state when it comes into existence, and will join the 57 other ones.

If I didn’t know better I’d say most of you people making the comments are Israeli intelligence just muddying the intellectual and philosophical waters to confuse the issue at hand. Does anyone in this discussion who call themself a “Jew” have an answer for people who claim that your arguments about being offended by the comments in the book in question are insincere because the Talmud specifically sanctions the killing of goyim for almost any reason. According to Rambam(Maimonides) in a Jewish dominated government it is actually encouraged to withhold any kind of medical care or assistance to save the life of a goy.
