Roland Martin wrote me an angry email response hours before I posted the video below. Roland’s email is below the fold, but watch my exchange with him and judge for yourselves. I will write more later on my impressions of our discussion, and post Roland’s own writings that prompted my questions. And I will post more in the coming weeks of my interview with the always illuminating Martin. But for now, (and if you can’t view the embed) watch the video here:
I read your blog post and it was utter BULLSHIT.
Yes, I said it. And for you to post a lie is utterly offensive.
Lie #1. He “weirdly explaining how his wife helped gay men” I never said she
helped gay men do anything. I told a story of ONE man who came to my wife.
ONE. So how in the hell did you all of a sudden make this plural?
Lie #2. Helped gay men come to Jesus.” The man who came TO HER was already
saved. He was already a Christian. He already committed his life to Christ.
He was already a member of the church. So how in the world did she lead them
to Jesus when they were already with Jesus?
I say the next item was a total and pathetic distortion. “convincing them to
abstain from sex.” I also spoke of single individuals who engage in
pre-marital sex. I see you didn’t say a word about that.
Do I mind discussing this issue? No. But don’t you dare spread a lie. ANYONE
who listens to the video will hear what you have alleged, and what I have
stated in this email.
But hey, why should I be shocked when the premise of your question was
already a lie, which you clearly stated in the video.
And it’s clear that you had your own agenda. You approached me on a number
of issues, but your real agenda was this issue. Hey, fine. But next time,
don’t waste my damn time asking me a bunch of stuff about the Democrats just
to get around to the gay issue. Just be a man and come out from the get-go
with the questions you really want to ask.
This was totally unprofessional, and I expect you to correct your lies.
That’s what any real journalist would do.

The communication also reports that Martin requested release from his vow of chastity, another disputed statement. Jesus Christ

Anyway, I’m happen that you’re going after Roland Martin. He’s one of the biggest apologist for Obama. I don’t want a Republican to win this year either, but I think it’s essential for those on the left to criticize Obama when he makes the wrong moves, and push him more towards a progressive direction, rather than shifting the Democratic Party further to the Right. Martin does none of that; he rationalizes Obama’s every move to the point where it has grown tiresome. Martin was one of the first to come out and applaud Obama for promising to continue Bush’s faith-based initiative, so his “pray-away-the-gay” beliefs doesn’t seem surprising to me. Being black myself, someone that was raised in church, I can say for certain that Martin isn’t the only one who thinks that way.
This is why I have mad respect for you, Max, is that you’ll challenge anyone — regardless of their alleged political alliance and stature — whose ideas are ass-backwards.
Nevermind, I went to YouTube and got it to work. Wow, Martin was electric sliding all around the question you asked him. The most embarrassing part of this video was when he actually DEFENDED Obama for having Donnie McClurkin on the campaign trail. Martin further proves how disingenuous he is by stating that you can’t silence black pastors regarding their views on homosexuality, therefore gays such just shut up and live with the abuse, yet earlier when you interrogated him about his wife and her “friendship” with the openly-gay pastor that they successfully converted, he tried to present himself as some clear-thinking person who accepts the gays. What a phony. No wonder he was upset with what you wrote, you exposed him for dancing around the question you asked while trying to have it both ways with what he labels as a “lifestyle”. I’m surprised that you didn’t ask him what he meant by “lifestyle,” that was a dead giveaway.
Roland Martin: “I also spoke of single individuals who engage in
pre-marital sex.” This is such a strange comment. Other than being celibate for life, how exactly does Roland propose that gays abstain from pre-marital sex? Or is he a proponent of gay marriage? And even then, what are gays to do before that becomes legalized?
Though I think that RogerD has a good point about marriage, I otherwise am with Martin on this one.
The short blurb he was responding to did not match the interview I saw in the video. He was discussing the failure of the democrats (historically) to bring the GLBT community and the Christian community into the conversation at the same time.
It is clear to me that we don’t have to throw one under the bus to respect the other. It appears that Martin agrees:

I also believe Obama agrees as well.
Martin was also talking about helping one man deal with his personal issues and conflicts about his role in his church. Nowhere do I see evidence of any “converting.”
As for abstinence, the video clearly is about the abstinence of a single person, regardless of orientation. Which is why I think that RogerD has an excellent point.
I don’t know what to say about this posting, I’m not sure what to believe anymore. This world is going crazy. Everything is getting out of hand, every one is confused.
