Comments Shut Down
I’ve been informed by the Huffington Post that comments were indeed shut down on my post: “Posts involving Israel inevitably invite a rash of anti-Semitic comments…” Although I approve every comment here, including anti-Semitic ones by commenters like Lizard, I understand the Huffpost’s rationale. If they approved Jew-bashing comments, they would be accused by right-wingers from Bill O’Reilly to Powerline of anti-Semitism. However unfair that is, it’s the way it is. The most disheartening thing is that my video contains extensive footage of extremist evangelicals proclaiming their wish for the “cleansing of the Earth” of all its unbelievers — an anti-Semitic position if I ever heard one. I suppose hateful people attract each other.
HuffPo’s policy of shutting down comments to avoid criticism by assholes like O’Reilly is gutless.
I contacted Huffington about what I considered censureship and received a response from a Wendy Cohen. She was very professional and very nice. She commented …
However, we must respect our writers and protect them from vicious and inflammatory comments. They too are entitled to free speech- the right to share their opinions without being subject to scathing and mean-spirited remarks.
… I had questioned huffingtons removal of comments that were not personal attacks or profane but rather took the blogger to task on facts – which has the effect of placing egg on the bloggers face. In otherwords, to some extent the bloggers are pandered to. There are several that are ‘protected’ more than others. I smell social politics here. I also question the policy that maintanes that bloggers have the right to share opinions without essentially being called to task.
I wont comment on the probable misuse of the phrase ‘anti-semitic’, and I wont tolerate hate speech.

But it raises a lot of questions to the extent of freedom of speech.

Though I’m not for censorship I think Huffington is being smart on this one. If they allowed more Anti-Semitic comments to be posted, like Max suggested, O’Reilly would be going after her next and saying that her site promotes hate. Hannity already interviewed Huffington last weekend and asked her if she would allow members to post the same type of remarks comparable to Daily Kos, and she said no, she would shut the comment section down immediately. So if she had allowed the racist comments to continue on Max’s video, Hannity and O’Reilly would be distorting, whining and bitching about this for weeks, calling Huffington a liar and hate-monger.
Since HuffPo is private it’s really not a matter of
free speech. Dealing with inflamatory rhetoric is
sometimes necessary. Intelligent dialogue is sadly
more often the exception rather than the rule.

Are you another one of the oh-so-common self-pitying Christians, Mark? Because your comment is simply not true. Numerous Jesoid-related posts on HuffPo have had comments cut off, including several that followed the (long overdue) death of the revolting Rev. Falwell.
HuffPo bends over backwards to give space to whiny evangelicals complaining about how “not all Christians support Bush.” Well, no shit – but pardon me if I still hold that the Bushpig Era has been a production of Jeezass Inc.

I am personally not at all shocked by the stance of the Christian Zionist movement. I too once called myself a Christian Zionist and rubbed elbows with some of the big namers who base out of Israel. I now know the truth and the truth has set me free. Another movement is swiftly and numerically growing and that is the movement of Preterism. Not the full-preterism which declares that Christ has already made His second coming but the Preterism which describes that all that is left is the loosing of Satan, The second coming of Christ and then the judgement. These heretical fanatics who call themselves Christian Zionists are truly the ones in for the shock of their lives.

It’s kind of dumb to close the comments. I can’t believe the people
over at the Huff Post haven’t ever heard of comment
moderation. On my wordpress install, I can set keywords that
will automatically throw certain posts in a moderation queue.

First of all, I loved this piece as I’ve loved your
previous works. Good job and I’m very happy you turned your
camera to the Christian Zionist movement which is not only
koo-koo fundamentalist but also incredibly influential on a
very important foreign-policy matter…
But on the issue of HuffPo’s shutting of comments… I’m very
disappointed but not very suprised. I like HP’s coverage on
almost everything but Israel – they’re really touchy about it.
I’m sure there were some nutcase anti-semites commenting on
your video, but I’ve had many of my comments – entirely rational
comments on Israel and US political culture – rejected on more
than one occasion. I think progressives need to push “liberals”
(if this is a meaningful distinction) on this issue – we have
to be able to speak about Israel without the anti-semite label
being thrown about.
Max, just got back from vacation, and I’m disappointed to
see that you’ve associated me with your shortcomings at
HuffPo. The whole notion of having your “post thoughts”
section closed, infuriates me. As a veteran with
meritorious service, I fought for freedom so that others
could write/speak freely, no matter what the content.
Speaking of “content,” I can tell you that any and
all references that I had made concerning Israel, such as you; “feeling more comfortable there,”were
completely ad hominem and a violation of my own
standards, completely deserving of Preston’s
description of “knee-jerk.” At the risk of sounding
cliche-ic, I work intimately with several surgeons
of Jewish faith. Myself and another conservative
physician often trade political barbs with them–
which almost always becomes an office spectator sport–
but we never (emphasis added) comment on each other’s
religion. Basically speaking, I may be retaliatory
at times, but your assertion of “anti-semitism,”
simply isn’t any part of my moral fibre, although, I
can see how you could come to that conclusion.
I apologize, and hereby retract any negative reference
to Israel. Please feel free to expunge any of my
ill-conceived comments concerning Israel, and try
appealing to the powers-that-be at HuffPo.

You are doing some good work-I like the video at the young republicans convention too. I am a christian. These Hagee people and millions of others have been taught an extensive detailed account of the end times supposedly based on the book of Revelation, Ezekial, and Daniel-one problem, there is not basis for this in the Bible. It is a tragic misuse of the Bible (the Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament parts).
Speaking as an evangelical myself, I support Israel, but know that doesn’t mean blind ignorant support or that Israel’s policies should never be denounced.
We need more of these videos.
Max- Awesome work, i actually heard your interview with scott horton on antiwar radio and came to check out the docu, pretty powerful stuff. The thing that amazes me and seems to be highly hypocritical about these people is the demonization of muslims because of their beliefs( jihad, death to infidels, waiting for the resurrection of the 12th imam) yet these evangelicals believe basically the same thing, jesus is gonna come back and wipe out all the unbelievers, including jews who they admit are gods chosen people, but obviously not chosen enough to get a golden ticket to heaven, and dont have any qualms about the murder of half the planet.
